CBT Therapy for Panic.
‘Anxiety’ versus ‘Panic Attacks’ is there a difference?
Most of us can relate to experiencing anxiety during stressful or challenging times in our lives. Common symptoms of anxiety include increased heart rate, ‘butterflies’ in the tummy, feeling on edge, tightness in our chest, over thinking or analysing situations and fearing the ‘worst’ will happen. A Panic attack includes many of these symptoms however the intensity they are experienced is much greater.
Panic attacks often appear suddenly and can be very overwhelming and frightening. They last an average of 5 to 20 minutes, whereas anxiety tends to ‘build’ and can occur for longer periods of time.
It is common for many people to experience a panic attack in their lifetime, however, recurrent panic attacks can become very distressing and cause great disruption to a person’s life.
The intensity of the physical symptoms can lead to thoughts about a panic attack being ‘harmful’ and people often adapt their behaviour in response to this. For example, the physical symptom of an increased heart rate during a panic attack may be misinterpreted as ‘being a heart attack’ and the person may live in fear of this symptom and adapt their behaviour in response to this. Most commonly in monitoring their heart rate or avoiding leaving the house.
Although the symptoms of panic can be frightening and incredibly uncomfortable, they do not cause us any physical harm or threat and are part of our natural response to danger. Our team of therapists are experienced in helping people understand Panic Attacks and following a comprehensive assessment will identify the course of treatment which often involves focusing on and challenging the unhelpful thoughts, beliefs and behaviours related to panic.
Each session will have a small homework task that will help you progress in overcome panic attacks and get back to a meaningful life.
